Ms. Gredd focuses her practice on defending individuals and entities in regulatory enforcement, white collar criminal, and complex commercial matters. Since joining LSW as a partner in 1993, Ms. Gredd has represented financial institutions, law firms, chief executive officers, chief financial officers, compliance officers, attorneys, public accountants, investment bankers, portfolio managers, analysts, traders, and executives in a wide variety of industries.
Ms. Gredd has successfully defended clients in investigations and actions brought by the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the Federal Reserve Board Division of Banking Supervision and Regulation, the Office of the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the New York State Attorney General, and various other federal and state authorities. Those matters have involved allegations of securities fraud, banking and other financial fraud, auditor misconduct, insider trading, market manipulation, earnings management, mismarking of positions, improprieties in the sale of various forms of securities (including municipal securities, auction-rate securities, mortgage-backed securities, and derivative products), mail and wire fraud, False Claims Act violations, environmental law violations, antitrust violations, false statements, obstruction of justice, and obstruction of Congress. On the civil side, Ms. Gredd has counseled and represented individuals and institutions in matters involving claims of securities fraud, banking and other financial fraud, RICO violations, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, workplace discrimination and harassment, attorney misconduct, and defamation.
Ms. Gredd has served as a court-appointed receiver and trustee in SEC enforcement actions and related bankruptcy proceedings and as a member of a court-appointed independent hearing committee in a labor racketeering action. In addition, Ms. Gredd has served since 2004 as a court-appointed member of the Criminal Justice Act Selection Committee of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Indigent Defense Organization Oversight Committee (IDOOC) for the Appellate Division, First Department, of the New York State Supreme Court. Ms. Gredd was appointed chair of IDOOC in 2009.
Ms. Gredd has lectured on criminal and civil law topics at programs sponsored by the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the New York City Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Federal Bar Council, and various business and law schools. Ms. Gredd also is the co-author of chapters entitled “Banking Crimes” and “Money Laundering” in the multi-volume treatise White Collar Crime: Business and Regulatory Offenses (Law Journal Seminars Press 1996). In addition, Ms. Gredd routinely appears in Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, The Legal 500, and other similar publications.
From 1985 to 1993, Ms. Gredd was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, where she served in various trial units, including the Securities and Commodities Task Force, before being appointed Chief Appellate Attorney and subsequently First Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division.
