Helen Gredd Receives Gould Award for Outstanding Oral Advocacy from the Office of the Appellate Defender

NewsSeptember 25, 2024

The Office of the Appellate Defender has honored LSW partner Helen Gredd with the Milton S. Gould Award for Outstanding Oral Advocacy. The award is presented annually to two of the most “highly regarded advocates in the nation.” Helen will be recognized along with David Patton of Hecker Fink LLP.

The awards will be presented at the OAD’s 31st Annual First Monday in October Gala Fundraiser at the New York City Bar Association on October 7th, 2024.

In keeping with OAD First Monday Gala tradition, the Gould recipients will argue a currently pending Supreme Court case before a “bench” of New York lawyers assuming the roles of Supreme Court Justices.

This year the OAD’s First Monday Court will hear Helen Gredd and David Patton address the question presented in Kousisis v. United States: Whether the money or property requirement of the mail and wire fraud statutes reaches a scheme that is not intended to, and did not, cause economic loss to the victim.

The Office of the Appellate Defender (OAD) is one of New York City’s oldest providers of appellate representation to poor people convicted of felonies, and the City’s second oldest institutional indigent defense office.  Since its founding in 1988, OAD has held a unique position in the field of indigent appellate defense: it not only provides superb appellate advocacy, it is also a leader in innovative, holistic, and client-centered representation.  OAD represents clients in Manhattan and the Bronx in the New York Supreme Court, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, First Judicial Department, the New York State Court of Appeals, and the federal courts.

LSW is proud to support the work of the Office of the Appellate Defender.
