LSW Wins Judgment Defeating NYC Mayor’s Claims Against NYC Campaign Finance Board

NewsJuly 14, 2025

LSW team Doug Maynard, Ramya Kasturi and Charlotte Blatt achieved a federal court victory on behalf of the New York City Campaign Finance Board on July 14, 2025.  On LSW’s motion for judgment on the pleadings, the Honorable Nicholas G. Garaufis of the Eastern District of New York dismissed a lawsuit brought by NYC Mayor Eric Adams and certain of his supporters.

Mayor Adams alleged that when the CFB denied him matching campaign funds on the basis of the now-dismissed federal indictment of the Mayor, the CFB violated the Mayor’s and his supporters’ free speech and due process rights, as well as various state laws.  The lawsuit claimed that the Mayor’s campaign was entitled to $3.5 million in matching funds from the CFB. LSW removed the action from NY State Supreme Court to the Eastern District of New York and then moved for judgment on the pleadings. The CFB successfully demonstrated to the Court that the CFB had independent and sufficient grounds to deny matching funds.

On July 14, 2025, Judge Garaufis granted the CFB’s motion and denied the Mayor’s demand for relief.
